My Creative Process
Pottery is a slow process with many steps, a true practice in patience. Most of my work is thrown on the wheel, though I dabble in hand building every now and then. I feel very lucky to work out of two community studios, where fellow potters generously share their tips and tricks. I love the inspiration, support, and joy they bring to my work. Here's how a piece goes from a ball of clay to something you can use in your daily life! 1. Wedge a ball of clay 2. Throw it on the wheel 3. Let it dry, then trim the piece (add a handle if it's a mug) 4. Carve and paint the details 5. Fire in the kiln 6. Glaze 7. Fire again

Get to Know the Artist
How do you balance your artistic vision with what buyers are looking for?
I really struggle with this balance, and I think about it often. When I make something that gets a lot of positive feedback, it feels SO good, and I'm motivated to continue making it. But sometimes I get stuck making a lot of the same thing, it's something I still enjoy (and it lets me dream that maybe someday I'll quit my job and spend all my time doing the things I love), but I don't always slow down enough to be creative and just play, and that's usually where my best work starts. Luckily I love making pottery and people love buying pottery, I just need to remind myself to take a break and try something new without worrying if someone will want to buy it.
What is a memorable response you've received from a fan or patron of your work?
My very first time selling my work was at a local farmers market. A couple stopped by my table and we chatted for a bit. When I told them this was my first market, they expressed their confidence that I was going to do well, not just that day, but in pursing pottery more seriously. They walked away with a mug and every year they reach out because they're excited to buy something new I've made. I'm so happy every time I hear from them. They were my first customers and it means so much that they've stuck around to cheer me on and add to their collection.
What (if anything) are you listening to while you create?
I alternate between music, podcasts, and audiobooks. I'm currently listening to the Dungeon Crawler Carl Series.
